The Grand Regency of Iteratos was a nation on the continent of Amerand
The context of this nation begins long ago in ages before the great revelations of steam and gears that dominate the lands of today, there was a group of warring weak houses that fought over the land in which we now inhabit. Those houses battled over the many mines and forges of their time– for coal, for pre-revolutionized industry, and for iron. Their endless wars brought great instability to the region and some houses died out while others, for a time, prevailed.
However, Godwinn, a traveller from distant lands, travelled to these lands. Godwinn saw potential in these warring houses. He saw a distant future where an Empire that would rule the forges, rule the mines, and utilize them to rise to glorious power. Godwinn sought out his aspirations via a presentation he gave to each of the (at the time) houses. One by one, he was rejected for his idea– the many lords considered his plan futile and unworthy of their time. However, one house, House Alder, gave in to his ideas, and began the construction of a great forge in the nearby mountains. This forge, the great power of the lands, underwent construction for twelve entire years before its completion. Once house Alder had finished Godwinn’s vision, they began the creation of more armour, weaponry, and materials than any house had ever had.
Godwinn employed the help of the most knowledgeable men of his day that were willing to work with him, and thus he created the Council of Tinkerers filled with the smartest engineers of his day. They turned the sheer force of the great forge into a superweapon, and employed their ideas upon the blades and bows made in the forge to give them certain benefits; the employment of heat to turn the blade extremely hot, the use of gears and clockwork to make crossbows fire at rapid speeds, the employment of retractable blades to surprise their opponents, ect. House Alder had turned iron to steel, fire and smoke to steam, and a vision to reality.
Once House Alder and the Council of Tinkerers had created an army equipped with their weaponry, they began conquering the many other houses of their day. One by one, they slowly came to control all of the lands of Iteratos and exterminated any house nobler than their own.
After the expansion had been completed, many people that were part of the new empire began to question who would be crowned the leader. A large majority considered Godwinn to be the rightful ruler, as he had envisioned it, however, as support for his leadership grew and many suspected that he would crown himself the ruler, the elders of house Alder gathered together and plotted his assassination. Speculation of what they had been planning grew, but quickly fell, as their house remained silent until Godwinn declared himself the emperor.
On the 1st day of the year of war, Godwinn broke the silence of the many suspected rulers and declared himself the de-facto emperor. That night, he declared his own coronation. From all over the new realm and of distant kingdoms people traveled to Copperguard to witness his crowning. Quickly, it became apparent that no member of house Alder had traveled to the coronation. Suddenly, the doors of the coronation hall were sealed shut, and the building exploded at the hands of house Alder. Godwinn, alongside his entire council of great engineers had been assassinated– except for one.
Abbus was the last surviving member of the council, who had been developing one of his great ideas at the time of the coronation. Upon realization that he was the last remaining legitimate of the new government, he gained the instant support of many from around the realm. Knights from around the realm gathered outside his estate in the capital to protect him in protest against house Alder and swore their lives to him. Many declared an oath of fealty, one knight documented this in a memoir (which is now our national anthem). They swore their oaths to Abbus and to the realm in the streets in front of hundreds of worried civilians. The army of house Alder quickly arrived to stand-off against the knights of the realm. At midnight, a warrior who swore his oath to Abbus swung his blade at a knight of house Alder, ending the standoff that had lasted hours and beginning the battle of Copperguard. The fight ensued for hours, but in a staggering victory, the knights of Abbus emerged victorious. As the sun rose, Abbus exited his estate, and gave “The speech of the morning sun”, declaring a total victory, and organizing an imperial militia with all the remaining knights to march on house Alder’s main city.
Later that day, the imperial militia left the capital and marched to the house’s capital where they tore down the gates and killed every last member of house Alder, rendering them extinct. As the sun set, Abbus gave “The speech of evening moon”, declaring the second victory in battle and proclaiming himself the true ruler of the Iteratos.
After the War of the Founders, Abbus spent lots of his time building up the new Empire. Alongside this, he worked on his great creation that he had spent his time before the war on– the Apparatus. The Apparatus was completed just three years following the war, and was of great complexity. It could, even to today’s knowledge, never be re-created. It was a machine that allowed humans who had died to be reborn as machines with their memories wiped, but personality intact.
